A Prayer For Bill Clinton
To my fellow People of Faith in the United States,
We are suspended in mid-transformation from praying God's forgiveness of our sins (as we forgive those who sin against us) to this rotten new growth---praying death upon our enemies: not merely those of different faith, but those of our same faith with whom we disagree. We are dangerously shifting away from the values of a Republic to a Theocracy that masks hatred, pettiness and ignorance with piety as we pour resentment upon those who offend our sensibility, who don't accept our interpretation of proper lifestyle.
Now our former President, whose Administration served as a focus for the emerging intensity of this Culture War, is requiring medical attention for his chest pains.
I ask you---despite any political disagreement you have had with the man, whatever moral high ground you have occupied to look down upon him---please join me in praying for ease to his pain, and a full healthy recovery.
I could argue that he has done more to make education accessible to all Americans than any one of his critics, that he has done more to bring relief to AIDS victims than any one of his critics, that whatever flaws he has a man and as a politician, he repeatedly took courageous and highly principled stances for racial reconciliation in the south long before it came into vogue in 2008.
Aside from that, it is not just a prayer for Bill Clinton. It is a prayer for the United States of America. It is a prayer for all of us.
